Colonial Secretary's Office,
Hongkong, 17th. October, 1908.
Sir,
1 ar directed by the Governor to acknow-
ledge the receipt of your answer to the Report of the Commis-
sion appointed to enquire into the general work of the Registry
of the Supreme Court.
You complain in several passages of your
answer that you have had no opportunity of cross-examining the
witnesses who gave evidence before the Commission.
The Commission was one to enquire into
the general working of the office and such an enquiry necessari-
ly involved enquiry into the action of the head of the Depart-
ment.
While no charges were or are preferred
against you the evidence does in many places directly and
adversely affect you, and though you cannot be placed in the position of a defendant before the Commission His Excellency
directs that if you desire it you should have an opportunity
of asking through the Commissioners any questions that you
desire to have put to the witnesses upon matters affecting you.
For this purpose the Commission will be
re-opened and I am to enquire which of the witnesses,
if any,
you dsire should be summoned before it to be questioned in the
manner indicated.

1 have etc.,
(sd.) E. 6. May,
Colonial Secratary.
